For those who didn't have time to go, a quick post to share the news that came out of the Sustainable Leather Forum on September 12th.
1. Reforms to the Reach regulation are under consideration which would aim to strengthen constraints on chemicals (notably Chromium and Glutaraldehyde) used during tanning.
Frank Boehly, President of the National Leather Council , recalled that these measures had a major impact on SMEs, which represent 90% of the leather industry and are essential to the territorial network.
2. Good news, Cédric Vigier, from the CTC , also announced the launch of ALIS (Automatic Leather Identification System) – a traceability solution for leather, created by the CTC and which will allow the industry to have traceability up to the slaughterhouse, or even the breeding. They have developed the technology and the laser marking machines but also the reading.
For those who want to see how it works, here is a video of the demo (sorry for the poor image quality):
The system is currently being deployed, particularly at the Haas tannery, whose leathers you can find on our site .
3. Finally, brands shared their CSR approaches:
o Isabelle Desfontaines presented the Eram group's Change for Good plan, and their desire to reduce their carbon footprint by 30% between 2020 and 2030 and to prove that the mass market can be both responsible and profitable. A great ambition 😊
o the Veja team, who told us about their experience of going up the meat chain so that their leather is sourced in the most responsible way possible (i.e., in Brazil, not contributing to the deforestation of the Amazon)
